James Good Limited picked up the award for best brand design at The Best of Welsh Design Awards on Friday. The awards, organised by Cardiff Design Festival, recognise the skill and passion of designers and design thinkers across Wales. We’re feeling pretty pleased with ourselves for bringing the award to Swansea, finally some recognition that creative talent does exist west of Cardiff!

The winning project was a rebrand for book publisher Seren, who produce poetry, fiction, visual arts and non-fiction with a Welsh connection.

Seren’s new identity works hard to communicate the publisher’s traditional values, along with their forward thinking attitude. The typography used is a specially created version of a traditional letterpress style font. A subtle hint at the company’s Welsh roots is communicated through the use of an accompanying logomark - a four point star (‘seren’ is Welsh for ‘star’). This mark is ideally suited for use as a recognisable symbol on the spines of Seren’s books.

Mick Felton, publisher at Seren, is pleased that the rebranding process seems to have sent a message of confidence to their authors and customers in these tough times. “Presenting the rest of the world with a rebrand and new website in the prevailing economic conditions showed that Seren meant business, and produced a positive response from partners such as authors, funders, sales teams, distributors, the media, the book trade and customers.”
