Community Church Identity Design & Group Logos

This Church is all about the people not the physical place. Community Church is a modern style of Church that needed an identity that clearly conveyed it’s modern values and approach to religion. They also needed an identity that could be owned by each and every member of the Church; a design that individuals would be proud to be involved with and one that they felt a connection to.

Initially we worked on silhouette designs of people doing things that people do. We proposed that we could visit the church, take photographs of people and use these photographs to create an identity system based on silhouettes of their members. We felt this was a good way to give them ownership and for them to feel involved in the process, but this felt a bit ‘done before’.

After realising that we were heading in the wrong direction, inspiration stumbled across us... Marbles! They’re unique, each one is hand made, there is a huge variety or diversity and they are absolutely better in a group, rather than alone... you can’t play marbles with a single solitary marble! We immediately raided our toy box and got photographing!

Community Church required more than a single logo as they had sub-groups within their Church that each required their own representation. We chose specific marbles to be associated with each sub-group based on their characteristics, for example; Encounter is for teenagers that kick back and listen to music so we chose moody, cool looking purple marbles, Evergreens is a group for more mature members of the Church so we chose marbles that looked a little older and Melody Makers is a group for mums and toddlers to bash instruments ‘in tune’ so we chose marbles that had waves of bright contrasting colours running through them.

From day dot we promised to deliver a design that the Church could own, that members would want to wear and a design that really demonstrated the style of the Church. We absolutely delivered on our word and the client was delighted with the finished result. When the design was introduced to the members it provoked a huge response, the more members thought about the concept, the more positive connotations sprung up and the more they started to genuinely love it.
