Google has acquired Motorola Mobility, in a move that is expected to facilitate the optimisation of Google’s Android operating system, already used on most Motorola handsets.

The main attraction of Motorola for Google is no doubt the estimated 17,000 patents the company currently holds, which will put Google in a position to emulate Apple’s competitive strategy of impeding progress of other manufacturers by claiming patent infringement on new mobile technologies.

This joining of forces is likely to propel Motorola back to its position amongst the leading mobile brands; Apple, HTC and Samsung. A sneaky but effective strategy.
